RTW – Round the World

My 1-year ‘travelversary” in the Sahara Desert, Morocco

RTW. Round the World. Typically used to describe a trip for a longer period of time to multiple countries and multiple continents.

Long term, slow and/or budget travel is as easy to do today as it’s ever been; arguably easier. My first backpacking trip was 20 years ago around Western Europe – no cell phones, no internet – and there is no doubt that our modern-day technology makes a world of difference for travel.

For the most part, the whole world is wired, bringing friends, family and the entire internet as close to you when traveling as it is when you are home. And with goods and services still significantly cheaper in many places around the globe compared to the US, being abroad for an extended period of time continues to be relatively affordable. For me, it was cheaper. I of course had to save the money for the trip on the front end, but my average monthly spend was far less traveling the globe than it is living in Atlanta. Is that surprising?
